Christchurch Surgical Associates is the largest medical practice of its type in Christchurch city.

Our team of 8 highly experienced and expert surgeons is also fully supported by a gastroenterologist and a large number of fully qualified and experienced ancillary staff.

The practice provides assessment, diagnosis, advice, management, treatment and personal, ongoing follow up care for a wide range of medical specialties.

In addition to scheduling more complex surgery at Southern Cross or St George’s Hospitals, Christchurch Surgical Associates surgeons also have the capacity to perform small, minor operative procedures in our small operating theatre, without the need for hospital admission.

Christchurch Surgical Associates is an affiliated provider with Southern Cross Healthcare, and has contracts with Southern Cross Hospital and St Georges Hospital to treat Accident Compensation patients with Hernias.


Birgit Dijkstra


Birgit is a General Surgeon with overseas experience in the UK and Ireland. Born in Holland, she did most of her surgical training in Christchurch. Birgit is experienced in both open and laparoscopic hernia repairs.

Grant Coulter


Grant trained in Christchurch then spent time working in Norwich, London and Melbourne. He was amongst the first NZ surgeons to use keyhole surgery for hernias and other procedures, and is now the gold standard.

Malcolm Gordon


Malcolm is a specialist general, breast and vascular surgeon, and is a director of Laservein. He trained in Christchurch, with further post-graduate training in the United Kingdom and Australia. He is experienced in keyhole and open hernia repair.

Philippa Mercer


Philippa has been in private practice since 1994 and is a founding partner in Canterbury Breastcare. She has also worked in the UK, Ireland and USA. She has also been a specialist General Surgeon at Christchurch Hospital since 1993.

Richard Flint


Richard trained in Christchurch, then in Boston (Harvard Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery) and New York (Surgical Oncology Fellow). He also works at Christchurch Hospital (Consultant General Surgeon), Christchurch School of Medicine (Senior Lecturer) & Christchurch Weight Loss Surgery.

Rob Robertson


Rob is a Specialist General Surgeon with a busy public and private practice. Rob has trained in Christchurch, Aust, the UK and USA and introduced keyhole surgery to Christchurch. He is one of Christchurch’s leading hernia surgeons.

Steven Kelly


Steven is a General Surgeon with specialist training in NZ and the UK at Cambridge, Edinburgh and Taunton. His special interest is the full range of the surgical management of hernias. He performs keyhole and open hernia repair including complex hernias.

Michael Burt


Michael Burt is a Consultant Gastroenterologist with extensive specialist training in New Zealand and Australia. He has over 20 years clinical experience in gastroenterology and has a busy public and private practice. His special expertise is in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.


Southern Cross: Surgical Associates has contracts with Southern Cross Hospital in Christchurch, is one of the largest and most advanced surgical hospitals in the South Island and is the biggest within the Southern Cross national network.

Central located on Bealey Avenue, the hospital has undergone significant recent upgrades and the addition of new facilities since the earthquakes.

Facilities include digital operating theatres, advanced digital scanning technologies, consulting facilities and a purpose-built endoscopy centre.

St George’s: Surgical Associates has a contract with St George’s Hospital in Christchurch. St George’s was ranked in the top 1% of hospital units in Australasia.

It is one of the best equipped private hospitals in Australasia and boasts modern facilities and the latest technology, highly qualified medical, surgical, nursing and ancillary staff.
